The school year was finished and the
sixth-grade class started their summer vacation...that is, most of them.
A number of students from Troy Elementary schools continued their
education with three weeks of intense study of Washington D.C, the
surrounding area, and the history of our nation.
This extended school year prepared them well for a trip that they will
never forget.

The journey began at 10:50 PM on June 24,
2001 when they boarded the bus. The next four days, guided by Teresa
Beltz of Kyle School, would be run like a military exercise. Precise
timetables were kept to the minute...nothing was missed.
There was never a sense of pressure, though. Plenty of time was afforded
at each stop to fully appreciate what surrounded us (yes...I was there).

The Washington tour guides were impressed
by our student's knowledge of the people, places, and events that have
formed our American history. Several commented that they have rarely seen
a more prepared group.
Teresa Beltz and Darla York provided not only academic training, but a
profound respect for our country. The students were models of manners and
courtesy.

All work and no play? Not on this trip!
The agenda included stops at the Hard Rock Cafe and ESPN Zone in
Washington, swimming, and a dinner theater featuring a musical comedy.

The entire trip was unlike anything I've
ever experienced. Parents, your children need to take this trip and if you
can be there as a chaperone, don't miss it.
And to Teresa Beltz, a caring teacher and a true patriot, we owe a debt
of gratitude for instilling in these young people an appreciation for what it
means to be an American.
