Citizen Police Academy Graduates - May 2002

The Troy Police Department’s Citizen’s Academy is designed to give residents a chance to see how their Police Department functions on a day to day basis.  Although conducted in a classroom setting, the course of instruction is based more on a “hands-on” type of approach where interaction between students and their instructors is strongly encouraged.  Although this course is an Academy class and it is being taught by Police Officers, it is not intended to make anyone a Police Officer upon graduation.  What it does offer though is the chance for citizens to interact with the Officers they see or meet on a daily basis in a much more relaxed environment.

The course is conducted over a six week period with one three-hour class each week.

Week 1 - Introduction
Students will get the opportunity to meet with the Chief, tour the facility, and receive a basic familiarization with the Department.

Week 2 - Patrol
Officers will explain the functions of patrol to include, "routine" traffic stops, DUI enforcement and pursuit driving. Students will get the chance to participate in their own recorded traffic stops.

Week 3 - Investigations
Officers from both the Patrol & Detective sections will explain the why's and how's of their investigative techniques covering everything from Domestic Violence to Narcotics. Participation in a mock crime scene will be included.

Week 4 - Juvenile Operations & Court System
Officers from the Juvenile section will explain their role within the community along with a municipal Court Judge and Prosecutor who will try and answer questions related to their responsibilities within the criminal justice system.

Week 5 - Special Operations
Members of the Department's Emergency Response team will be on hand to display some of their special weapons and possibly demonstrate their unique skills along with the Hostage Negotiation Unit.

Week 6 - Closing
