Carbon Monoxide Detector Program and Legislation

The Troy Fire Department offers free carbon monoxide detectors / smoke detectors to qualified homeowners. This program was implemented in 2015 after carbon monoxide poisoning tragically took the lives of three children in our community.

If you own your home and have gas appliances/heating or an attached garage, you will qualify for our program. Please call 937-335-2227 or email lyle.bolin@troyohio.gov as the contact info for this program to schedule the install of your free dual carbon monoxide / smoke detector.

If you are a renter, it is the responsibility of your landlord/property owner to provide one for you according to the City of Troy Ordinance 1501.04. Please contact your landlord if you do not already have a carbon monoxide AND smoke detector.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a landlord, do I need to install a CO Alarm on every level of my unit or just one?

While it is recommended to install one alarm per level, the minimum requirement with this ordinance is one alarm per required rental unit.

Where do I install my alarm, at the floor level or ceiling level?

While carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to exact location. If installing one alarm in a home, it is best to place the alarm near the bedrooms.

What alarm do you recommend?

We currently are installing combination carbon monoxide/photoelectric smoke alarms with a ten-year sealed lithium battery. However, this is our recommendation only. As long as the alarm meets UL 2034 (Underwriters Laboratories), it is an approved alarm.
