Dye Mill Road Compost Facility

The Dye Mill Rd Compost Facility is a Class IV Compost Facility available to all City of Troy residents. The compost facility accepts yard waste materials including grass, brush, leaves, garden refuse, and rock.  The compost facility is owned by the City and managed by a local contractor.


The contractor is responsible for the proper disposal of the grindings. The City composts approximately 6,500 cubic yards of material annually.


The City encourages residents to use this facility to dispose of large yard waste items that are not acceptable for disposal at the curb, and thanks residents for keeping the compost facility free of trash and other prohibited materials.


The Dye Mill Road Compost Facility is closed on Memorial Day, July 4, the day before Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving Day. The facility will be closed from the last Saturday in November through early March.


Due to an agreement with Tipp City, use of the Dye Mill Road Compost Facility is free of charge for Troy and Tipp City residents who reside within the corporation limits of their respective cities. Proof of residency may be required. No commercial dumping is permitted. Below is a complete list of acceptable and prohibited materials.

  • Grass

  • Leaves
  • Logs
  • Rock
  • Sand
  • Shrubs
  • Sod
  • Stumps
  • Trees and limbs
  • Wood chips

Prohibited Materials

As an EPA Class IV Compost Facility, we cannot accept the following materials:
  • Asbestos
  • Batteries
  • Brick or block
  • Commercial trash
  • Commingled yard waste (with solid waste)
  • Concrete
  • Construction and demolition debris (except for clean untreated wood)
  • Containerized bulk liquids
  • Dead animals or animal waste
  • Food of any kind
  • Fruit or vegetables (including pumpkins)
  • Hazardous waste
  • Infectious waste
  • Landscaping timbers and plastic edging
  • Painted lumber and pallets
  • Painted rock
  • Plant pots
  • Plants/vines with fruit attached (including tomato vines, pumpkin plants, etc.)
  • Solid waste / household trash

Mulch Sales

Per Troy's contract with the facility's operator, the operator at the Dye Mill Road facility is permitted to sell mulch, with a $5-per-yard discount for Troy and Tipp City residents. Per-yard pricing is available here.
