[ARCHIVED] Downtown Road Diet - Beginning June 2018

Downtown Road Diet
Beginning June 2018

The City of Troy is beginning to implement a downtown road diet along Market Street. The road diet will reallocate the asphalt to a single lane in each direction and a shared center left-turn lane. Work will include:
•  A reduction in the number of travel lanes from 4 lanes to 3 lanes
•  Traffic/pedestrian signals deactivated around the Public Square at the existing crosswalks
•  In the existing crosswalks around the Public Square, mid-point islands will be installed for pedestrian safety

ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project is part of the implementation of the downtown traffic and parking study completed in 2017 by Woolpert. The study recommended the above changes in an effort to maximize parking and provide wider, safer driving lanes for vehicular movement. The boundaries of the road diet include Market Street from Water Street to Simpson Street. Due to grant funding requested for the W. Main Street construction project, the W. Main Street road diet will be implemented at a later date. The traffic/pedestrian signal will still be deactivated.

TRAFFIC & PEDESTRIAN IMPACTS
•  The project will be completed in phases starting with N. Market Street and then S. Market Street throughout the spring and summer months. The W. Main Street road diet will be completed in conjunction with a construction project in 2022.
•  Temporary lane closures will be scheduled to minimize impact.
•  The traffic pattern around the Public Square will remain the same after the downtown road diet is implemented.
•  Motorists are reminded that pedestrians have the right-of-way when crossing in a crosswalk.
•  Pedestrians should watch for traffic before crossing. If necessary, pedestrians should wait at the mid- point islands until it is safe to cross. Additional pedestrian crosswalk signage will be added for safety.
•  Signs referencing signals are under study for removal will be installed to inform the general public of upcoming work.
